10 Accessories or equipment to start working out at home

As we talked about in the post on: How to start working out at home, it is not necessary to have any special equipment to make routines that work. 

Nevertheless, there are different types of accessories or equipment that you can acquire to complement your routines if therefore you wish it.

Elastic bands of different types of resistance: 

There are different types of elastic bands. I prefer these 2:

The first one comes in a package with different types of resistance and handles, which makes it very versatile. You can even place them in the door and work similarly to suspension.

The second one is open or flat resistance bands. Since these are long, it allows you to work all the body and even do stretching exercises.

Dumbbells are for those who wish to add weight to their routines, mainly if you are new to that. They sell them in packages of different weights. 

They are my favorites because they are small, they do not take up much space, you can combine them to vary the weights.

Ankle weights:

You can use it on the legs or the arms. With them, you can work on simple resistance workouts and routines like glute and inner thigh workouts, glute bridges, shoulder exercises, or even running. You can also use them in conjunction with the resistance bands.

It helps to use a soft, smooth surface to do the exercises, especially if they are core exercises or where you require to lay down,  be seated, and even stretch. 

There are two types of mats that you can use:

Yoga mat: This is the most popular one and is inexpensive. It doesn't occupy much space. It's easy to carry around.

Martial arts mat (tatami): This is a little more expensive; it's heavier and usually is a little complicated to find. If you follow my video routines, you know that I use this type of mat.

It's thicker, so it is perfect for exercises with high impact.

Stability disc:

This is another one of my favorites. This type of disc helps to work on your balance, also core exercises, push-ups, or glute bridges.  

Adding an unstable surface to a workout creates a greater activation of muscles. They are inexpensive and do not take up much space.

Push-up stand:

These stands are ideal to do tricep dips, especially when it becomes difficult to use a chair or bank since the distance is short, or just help you do push-ups.

Ab wheel: 

They are a good option for gaining strength and defining the abdomen, especially if you do not like to do crunches.  

It's not difficult to learn how to use it, doesn't take up space when storing.

Pilates ball:

This is another of my favorites. It also helps with instability work; you can do abdomen, arm, or leg exercises. It's also good for back stretching to gain flexibility and makes them more fun. 

It's only con is that it takes up some space to store it and you have to know what size to buy; there are different sizes; a very small or too large one could not work for you.

Yoga blocks:

Yoga blocks can have different uses even if you don't practice yoga. I like to use them to do stretching exercises, because they help me gain more flexibility.

Non-Slip grips socks (Yoga socks):

This is more of an accessory; for those who do not like to do exercises barefoot or has issues slipping too much. I use them for capoeira, and they have helped me a lot.

You do not need to buy all these products to have effective training at home. Establish your goals first, and then buy the equipment you think you need to use.
